Keeping the Greenbelt Green

On the surface Riverside appears to be just another city, but it has a rich and innovative history in the cultivation of Citrus. As you explore there are hints of this past embedded in the city, the most notable of which is the Arlington Greenbelt. Past citizens voted to pass Prop R measure C and immortalize their living gold in an agricultural preserve.

In our modern world Citrus is slowly being replaced by low density housing and other forms of agriculture. Catalyzed by a changing market and new water demands this change is unavoidable. One can’t help but ask, what does the future hold for the Arlington Greenbelt?

Looking to the future of those who make their livelihood within the Greenbelt, Carl Pongs initiated the formation of a non-profit organization. En-Gage Riverside Inc was formed to protect, preserve, and promote agriculture within the city and the interests of those dependent on the Gage Canal.

On February 25th, En-Gage hosted a meeting of community members. In attendance were traditional farmers, nursery men, residents, the philanthropically minded and Ward 5 city council representative Gaby Plascencia. Among those present two immediate concerns were expressed: water rates and the need for a market. Multiple ideas and solutions were expressed, and a clear path will need to be laid out. Passion for keeping the Greenbelt Green is present; all we need now is the people and plan to make it happen.

Encouraged by the support shown at the soft introduction, En-Gage Riverside Inc is ready to progress and invite the public to join in our mission. What does the future hold for the Arlington Greenbelt? We don’t know yet, but Engage Riverside is committed to preserve, protect, and promote the use of open space and agriculture in the area.

Will you join in securing Arlington Greenbelt’s future?
